Move your mail to Nemi

Bring the mail you already have, from Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook or Thunderbird, by uploading an export of it.

On this page

Settings, Import mail takes an export of your old mailbox and puts every message in Nemi Mail, with its original date, in the conversation it belongs to. It takes one .mbox file, which is what Google Takeout, Apple Mail and Thunderbird export, or any number of .eml files, one per message. The import runs on Nemi's side: once the upload is done you can close the page, and Settings shows how far it is, for example "Importing 12,402 of about 40,000".

From Gmail#

  1. 1

    Open Google Takeout

Go to takeout.google.com and press Deselect all, then tick Mail only. All Mail data included lets you pick some labels instead of all of them.

  2. 2

    Create the export

Press Next step, keep Send download link via email and press Create export. Google emails you when it is ready, which can take hours for a large mailbox.

  3. 3

    Unzip it

Download the file from the email and open it. Inside Takeout, Mail is one file ending in .mbox, usually called All mail Including Spam and Trash.

  4. 4

    Upload it to Nemi

In Nemi Mail, Settings, Import mail, press Choose a file and pick that .mbox file.

A message lands where it was in Gmail: Inbox in the inbox, archived mail in Archive, Sent in Sent, Spam and Trash in Spam and Trash. Starred mail is flagged, unread mail stays unread, your Gmail labels become labels in Nemi Mail, and Updates and Promotions go to the Updates and Newsletters bundles when bundles are on. Drafts and chats are not imported.

From Apple Mail#

  1. 1

    Export the mailbox

In Mail on the Mac, select a mailbox in the sidebar, such as Inbox, then choose Mailbox, Export Mailbox and pick a folder. Mail makes a folder there named after the mailbox, such as Inbox.mbox.

  2. 2

    Upload the file inside it

In Nemi Mail, Settings, Import mail, press Choose a file, open that Inbox.mbox folder and pick the file in it called mbox.

  3. 3

    One mailbox at a time

Export and import each mailbox you want to keep, one after another.

From Outlook#

  • In Outlook on the web or the new Outlook, open a message, then More actions, Save as or Download, to save it as an .eml file. Select several .eml files at once in Choose a file to import them together.
  • For a whole Outlook or Microsoft 365 mailbox, link the account in Settings, Linked accounts instead: Nemi Mail brings in the last 90 days and keeps it in step. See Linking Gmail, Outlook and other accounts.

From Thunderbird#

Each Thunderbird folder is already an mbox file. Choose Help, Troubleshooting Information, then Open Folder next to Profile Folder; under Mail or ImapMail the files without an extension, such as Inbox and Sent, are the ones to upload.

Where other mail goes#

Apple Mail, Outlook and Thunderbird exports do not say which folder a message was in, so mail from them goes into a folder called Imported, ready to look through and file. Mail sent from one of your own addresses goes to Sent. Read and flagged come across where the export records them; anything else is imported as read.

What to know#

  • Imported mail counts toward your Nemi Mail storage. An export larger than the room left in your mailbox is refused before it uploads, with how much room there is; one that fills the mailbox halfway pauses, and Resume carries on once you have made room. See Mail limits per plan.
  • One import can be up to 50 GB, and up to 5,000 .eml files or 1 GB of them at a time. One import runs at a time.
  • Nothing is sent and nobody is told: rules, automatic replies and read receipts do not run on imported mail, and the Screener does not ask about its senders.
  • A message that is already in Nemi Mail is skipped, so importing the same export twice, or an export that overlaps a linked account, does not make copies.
  • A message larger than 42 MB, or one that cannot be read, is left out and counted under could not be read.
  • Pause stops the import where it is, Resume carries on, and Cancel import stops it for good. What was imported stays either way.
  • The file you upload is deleted as soon as the import ends. An upload you never finished is deleted after a day, and an import left paused for 30 days is cancelled.
