Writing a document

Create a document, format it, and understand what the save state in the toolbar is telling you.

On this page

Open Docs from the app launcher, the grid of dots at the top of the sidebar, then press New document. The document exists immediately, in the workspace you are currently in, and starts saving from the first character you type. There is no Save button anywhere in Nemi Docs.

Starting a document#

  1. 1

    Press New document

Or press Import to start from a file. Word (.docx), OpenDocument (.odt), Rich Text, Markdown, plain text, HTML and CSV all come in, and a .nemi file opens as its own new document.

  2. 2

    Name it

Type over Untitled in the top left of the editor. The name is what the document is called everywhere else, including in a share link.

  3. 3

    Write

The floating bar at the bottom of the screen holds the formatting. Everything in it applies to what you have selected, or to the paragraph the cursor is in.

What the formatting bar holds#

PanelWhat is in it
Text styleBold, italic, underline, strikethrough, inline code, text size, text colour, highlight, and Clear to strip formatting off a selection.
ParagraphNormal text and headings 1 to 6, bullet list, numbered list, checklist, quote, left, centre, right and justified alignment, and line spacing.
InsertImage, table, link, code block and divider.

Undo and redo sit to the left of the three panels. A font picker appears in Text style on accounts that have it.

A checklist is a real list of tickable boxes rather than a paragraph of dashes, so it survives an export and stays tickable for whoever you share the document with. Tables are inserted three by three with a header row, and grow as you type into them.

Pages#

A document is drawn as discrete sheets with a gap between them, the same layout you get when you export a PDF, so what you see on screen is where the page breaks will actually fall. A long document can also be split into named pages, listed in the sidebar: press Add page to make one, and right-click a page to rename or delete it. Collaborators can each be on a different page at the same time.

Saving, and the chip that tells you about it#

Your document is one file, stored in Nemi's own .nemi format: compressed, with its images and its authorship record inside it. Edits are sent to the workspace as you make them, so there is nothing to save and nothing to lose to a closed tab. The chip in the top right of the editor says which of four things is happening.

  • Saved. Everything you have typed is stored.
  • Saving. A save is in flight. It normally lasts under a second.
  • Reconnecting. The connection dropped. Your edits are held locally and sent when it comes back, so keep the tab open rather than closing it.
  • Save issue. Something is refusing to store. Stop typing, wait a moment, and if it does not clear, copy your last paragraph somewhere safe before reloading.

How many documents you can have#

There is a ceiling on the total number of documents, spreadsheets, canvases and forms you can create. It is deliberately high: it exists to stop abuse, not to sell you an upgrade, and a normal amount of work will not reach it.

Can I get the document out of Nemi?

Yes, at any time. Export offers Word (.docx), PDF, Markdown, HTML, plain text, Rich Text, a PNG image of the page, and .nemi itself, which is the only one that carries your images and authorship with it.

Where did the templates go?

A template gallery on the Docs home is being rolled out. If you do not see it, it has not been switched on for your account yet.

I closed the tab mid-sentence. Did I lose it?

Almost certainly not: saves are continuous. If the chip said Reconnecting or Save issue when you closed it, the last few seconds may not have made it, and Version history is the place to check.
