Mentioning people, files and documents

Type @ to drop a person, a file or another document into your text, and see which documents point at the one you are reading.

Type @ while you are writing and a list appears: the people you work with, the files in your workspace and your other documents. Pick one and it becomes a chip in the sentence, so the text reads as a name instead of as a web address. If typing @ does nothing, it has not been switched on for your account yet.

  • A document chip opens that document when you click it, in Docs, Sheets, Canvas or Forms, whichever it belongs to.
  • A file chip opens the file.
  • A person chip opens your page for them in Contacts, or your mail application when there is no page to open. See Everything you have shared with one person.

The older shortcut for linking a document still works and makes the same kind of chip: type [[, then part of the title, and pick from the list. Typing the brackets and never picking anything leaves your text exactly as you typed it.

Mentioned in#

The Mentioned in panel in the toolbar lists the documents that link to the one you have open. It is how a set of notes is read backwards as well as forwards: from a decision to everything that referred to it, rather than only from a page to the pages it points at.

The panel only lists documents you can open yourself, so a title never reaches somebody who has no access to the document it belongs to.
