Forms

Building a form

Fifteen question types, required fields, and a design panel that makes the page look like yours rather than like a form.

On this page

Open Forms from the app launcher and press New form. A form is a document in your workspace, like a doc or a sheet, so it belongs to the workspace you were in when you made it and everybody in that workspace can work on it. If Forms is not in your launcher, it has not been switched on for your account yet.

The sidebar has the whole of the app in it: Build for the questions, Design for how the page looks, Preview for what a respondent sees, and Responses once answers start arriving.

The question types#

TypeWhat it gives the respondent
Short answerOne line of text
Long answerA box for several lines
EmailOne line, checked for a valid address
PhoneOne line, checked for a valid number
LinkA web address, https only
Multiple choiceA list of options, pick one
CheckboxesA list of options, pick any number
DropdownThe same as multiple choice, in a compact menu
Yes / noA single on and off switch
NumberDigits only, with an optional minimum and maximum
DateA calendar picker
TimeA time of day
RatingStars, anywhere from 3 to 10 of them
ScaleA numbered scale with a caption at each end
File uploadRespondents attach files, up to 5 per question

File upload is still rolling out. If the type is missing from the picker, it has not been switched on for your account yet.

Every question can be marked required, can carry a line of helper text under its label, and can have a photo above it. Text questions can also have a placeholder. A choice question with no options yet is never treated as required, so a half-built question can never make a published form impossible to submit.

The settings that change how it behaves#

Settings

Presentation
ListFocus

All questions on one page, or one at a time.

Accepting responses

Off keeps the link alive but refuses new answers.

Ask for the respondent's name
Confirmation messageThanks, your response has been recorded.
The Settings block at the bottom of Build. Presentation is still rolling out, so your form may only offer the list layout.
  • Accepting responses is the switch to reach for when you want answers to stop but the link to keep working. Somebody who opens it is told the form is not accepting responses right now.
  • Ask for the respondent's name adds a name field at the top and a Name column in the response sheet. Turn it off and submissions arrive anonymous.
  • Confirmation message is the sentence somebody sees after they press submit. Write the next step into it if there is one.

Making it look like yours#

The Design tab is a full theme editor, and the preview updates as you change it. Start from one of the ready-made looks and then change whatever you like: picking a look replaces your current design, so pick first and tune afterwards.

  • Background: a flat colour, a gradient, a mesh, dots, a grid, lines, or a photo you can dim.
  • Card: solid, glass, outline or none, with the corner radius, the shadow, an accent bar along the top or the left, and the column width.
  • Colours and type: an accent used for buttons, stars and focused fields, text and muted text colours, a heading font and a body font, and the title size and weight.
  • Answer fields: outlined, filled or just underlined, with their own corner radius.
  • Submit button: solid, soft, outline or gradient, rounded, pill or sharp, your own label on it, full width or not.
  • Header: a logo, which can be an uploaded photo or simply an emoji, aligned left or centred.
  • Finishing touches: animate the fields in, show a progress bar, and a switch for the small "Made with Nemi Forms" line at the bottom.

Limits#

How many forms may accept responses at the same time, and how many responses you may receive per month, depend on your plan. Both are in Sharing a form.
