Uploading files and folders

Drag files or whole folders onto the window. Uploads go straight from your browser to storage, and every plan has a per-file, per-upload and per-month ceiling.

On this page

Drag files anywhere onto the file browser and they upload into the folder you are looking at. A whole folder works too and keeps its structure: the folders inside it are recreated in Nemi. If you would rather pick from a dialog, press Upload Files in the toolbar.

The bytes go straight from your browser to storage. Nothing queues behind a server of ours, which is why a single file can be very large without the upload crawling. Four files upload at a time; the rest wait their turn.

1

Drop the files

Into the folder you have open, or onto a folder to put them inside it.

2

Nemi checks the limits

Largest file, number of files, total size and what is left of your storage.

3

Your browser uploads

Four at a time, straight to storage, with a progress bar per file.

4

The file appears

It is scanned for viruses in the background, and sharing unlocks when that finishes.

A failed file is retried twice before it is reported, so a brief network hiccup usually fixes itself.

One drag is one upload, however many files it contains. Limits come from the plan of the person who owns the workspace, not from your own.

The monthly figure is upload volume, not storage: it counts every gigabyte you send us in a calendar month, and deleting a file afterwards does not give the allowance back. That is deliberate rather than mean. Stored bytes are billed to us for a minimum period whether they stay or not, so an upload costs money the moment it happens. Storage itself is a separate number, explained in Storage and what counts towards it.

When an upload is refused#

  • One file is too big. The message names the file and the ceiling. Nothing else in the batch is cancelled. Convert or compress it first, or move up a plan.
  • Too many files, or too much at once. Split the drop into smaller batches. The per-upload ceiling is never higher than your total storage.
  • Too many uploads this hour. Wait, or gather the files into one drag instead of twenty.
  • Monthly upload limit reached. It resets at the start of the next month. Auto-extend raises it as well as raising storage: see Storage and auto-extend.
  • Storage full. Nothing is deleted. Empty the trash, remove something, or add space.

A flaky connection#

A file that fails mid-transfer is retried automatically, up to three attempts in total, and the row says "Retrying" while that happens. A file that has made no progress for fifteen minutes is given up on. Retrying restarts that file rather than resuming from where it stopped, so on a bad line it is worth uploading large files one at a time and leaving the laptop awake.

Virus scanning#

Uploads are scanned in the background. While a file says "Scanning for viruses" you can move and rename it, but you cannot share it yet. The badge clears itself when the scan finishes, without a refresh. Very large files and files inside a vault are not scanned, because a vault file is encrypted before it leaves your device and a scanner cannot read it.

Can I upload from my phone?

Yes, including whole photo albums from the picker. For moving one file off a phone quickly, Beam is faster.

Can somebody without an account send me files?

Yes, with an upload link. Their files land in a folder you choose and count against your storage.

Does an empty folder upload?

Folders are created from the paths of the files inside them, so a folder with nothing in it is not recreated. Make it with New Folder instead.

The upload says the file is too large, but it is smaller than my plan allows.

Check whether you are uploading into somebody else's workspace. Limits follow the workspace owner's plan.
