Browsers, phones and offline

Nemi runs in a browser. There is nothing to install, on any platform, and there is no separate mobile app: the site is built to work on a phone, including uploading, previewing, signing in and joining a meeting.

Browsers#

A lot of Nemi happens on your own device rather than on a server: photos are compressed before they are uploaded, meeting backgrounds are removed in the tab, captions are transcribed locally, and vault folders are encrypted and decrypted in the browser. That is why the versions matter more here than on an ordinary website.

On a phone#

• Uploading, downloading, previews, sharing and the share pages you send to clients all work.
• Docs, Sheets and Canvas can be read and edited, though a long editing session is nicer on a keyboard.
• Meet works, including camera, microphone and joining as a guest. Screen sharing is a desktop feature, because phone browsers do not offer it.
• Beam is designed for a phone: it is how you get a file off one.
• Add Nemi to your home screen and it opens without browser chrome, like an app.

Offline#

Nemi needs a connection. Documents save through a live connection to the workspace, so an edit made while offline is not queued for later: if a page tells you it cannot save, stop typing and wait for the connection rather than closing the tab. Keep an eye on the save state in the toolbar, which says when the document was last stored.
