Troubleshooting

Meetings

Camera and microphone permissions, one person who cannot connect, quality that drops as the room fills, screen sharing on a phone, and the participant cap.

On this page

Meet connects everybody in a call directly to everybody else, with no media server in the middle. That is why nothing said in a call can be read on our side, and it is also the reason for two of the problems on this page: a network that refuses direct connections, and quality that drops as the room fills.

Nobody can see or hear you#

What you seeWhat it meansWhat to do
Your browser is blocking the camera or microphonePermission was refused, now or at some point in the past, and remembered.Open the padlock in the address bar, allow camera and microphone for Nemi, then reload.
Another app is using your microphoneSomething else has the device open, usually another meeting app.Quit it and press the button again.
No camera was found on this deviceNothing is connected, or the lid is closed on an external monitor.Plug it in, or pick a different device from the picker.
Meetings need a secure connection (https)The page was opened over an insecure address.Open Nemi over https.
Screen sharing was cancelled, or your browser blocked itThe picker was dismissed, or the system refused the permission. On macOS, allow screen recording for the browser in system settings, then try again.

If the browser never asks for permission at all, it was refused earlier and remembered. Nothing in Nemi can undo that; it is cleared in the site settings behind the padlock. And use the screen before you join: the microphone bar moves when you speak, which is the cheapest way to catch the wrong input before eight people are waiting.

One person cannot connect while everybody else is fine#

A single tile stuck on a connection error means those two browsers could not find a route to each other. Corporate networks, hotel wifi and some VPNs block the direct connections a call is made of. Switching that one person to another network, often their phone connection, fixes it more reliably than anything either of you can change in the app. Leaving and rejoining the call is worth one try first.

Quality drops as more people join#

In a mesh, every browser sends its camera to every other browser, so eight people means each of you is uploading seven copies of yourself. Nemi lowers the camera bitrate and resolution as the room fills to keep that within reach of a normal connection. A screen share is deliberately not lowered, because the screen is why everybody is looking.

  • Turning cameras off is the single biggest improvement available to a struggling call. Audio survives conditions video cannot.
  • Background blur and replacement are real work for your computer. On an older laptop they are the first thing to switch off when the fan gets loud or your picture stutters.
  • Close the other heavy tabs. A call, a background effect and a recording in one tab is a lot to ask.
  • Wired beats wifi, and wifi beats a phone on a weak signal, for exactly the reason above.

Screen sharing is missing on my phone#

It is not there. Phone browsers do not offer screen sharing at all, so the button is absent rather than broken. Everything else works on a phone, including camera, microphone, chat and joining as a guest.

The meeting is full, or it ended#

Both numbers come from the host's plan, not from yours. Ten is the ceiling on every plan: past that, a mesh stops being a reasonable thing to do to somebody's laptop.

"This meeting is full" means somebody has to leave before the next person gets in. A meeting with a length cap warns five minutes before it reaches it and then ends, so if a call died on the hour, that is what happened rather than a crash. Start a new one with the same link.

I recorded the meeting and the file is gone.

A recording is made in the recorder's own tab and uploads when they stop. Closing the tab mid-call kills it, and there is no copy on our side to fall back on: we hold no media from a call at all. Nothing we can do afterwards recovers it.

Can you send me a recording of a call I was in?

No. The audio and video never reach a server of ours, so no recording exists on our side to send. Ask whoever pressed record.

I turned captions on and nothing appears.

Captions transcribe the microphone the call is using, on your own device, so a muted or wrong input produces nothing. They also need a browser with its own recogniser, and the menu says when yours has none.

I have no background, caption or recording buttons.

Those follow the host's account rather than yours, and they are still rolling out. If the host does not have them yet, nobody in that meeting does.

Echo, or a horrible squeal.

Two devices in the same room with speakers on. Mute one of them, or put headphones on. No software cancels a microphone hearing another laptop's speaker.
