Saving and sync in Docs, Sheets and Canvas
What the save chip is telling you, what to do when it says Reconnecting or Save issue, and why two people can be looking at different text.
On this page
Docs, Sheets and Canvas have no save button. Your typing is sent to the workspace as you type, and the chip in the toolbar is the only status that matters. Read it before doing anything else, and above all do not close the tab while it is anything other than Saved.
The chip in the toolbar
Everything you have typed is stored. Safe to close.
Normal, and usually gone in under a second. Wait for it.
The live connection dropped. Your edits are being held on this device until it returns.
The document could not be stored. Keep the tab open and read the section below.
Reconnecting, or Save issue#
Nemi needs a connection. There is no offline mode, and an edit made while the connection is down is not queued for later delivery beyond what your open tab is holding. So the fix is almost always the same one: leave the tab open and let the connection come back. It reconnects on its own and sends what it was holding.
- 1
Stop typing
Adding more to the pile does not help, and if you are on a train it makes the pile bigger.
- 2
Check the connection, not the document
Load any other page. If the whole network is down, that is the problem and the document is fine.
- 3
Wait for the chip to say Saved
That is the only proof the work is stored. It reconnects by itself, so this usually takes seconds.
- 4
If it stays red for minutes, copy your last paragraphs somewhere else
Select, copy, paste into a note on your machine. Cheap insurance while you sort the connection out.
- 5
Reload only once it says Saved
A reload while the chip is red throws away whatever the tab was still holding.
Two people seeing different content#
- One of you is on Reconnecting. Nothing crosses until that side is back. Both of you should check your own chip before assuming the document is broken.
- They cannot type at all. Their link is set to Can view, which the server enforces rather than just the interface. Change it to Can edit and it takes effect on their next reload.
- Their cursor is invisible but they are present. Carets only show for people looking at the same page of the document as you.
- Somebody restored an old version. Open tabs reload themselves when that happens, so a document that jumped backwards and refreshed is that, not a bug.
- The document looks doubled. Reload the tab once. If the duplication survives a reload, stop editing and tell us: that is worth chasing rather than working around.
Getting an earlier version back#
The clock icon in the toolbar opens version history. It is the answer to "I have wrecked this document", and it is faster than trying to undo your way out. How far back it goes depends on the plan of whoever owns the document.
| Plan | Version history kept |
|---|---|
| Free | 7 days |
| Starter | 30 days |
| Creator | 90 days |
| Pro | 365 days |
| Max | Unlimited |
| Business | Unlimited |
Older revisions are pruned past the window, and the newest revision always survives, so there is always something to restore to.
Images and imports that are refused#
- "Storage limit reached." The owner of the document is out of room, not the image. Free space up or add some.
- "Image is too large (max 10 MB)." Compress or convert the image and drop it in again.
- "This Excel file is too large to import." Split the workbook, or import the sheets you need separately.
- "Could not read this Excel file." The file is damaged or is not really a spreadsheet. Open it in its own program and re-export it.
Is my work lost if my laptop dies while the chip says Saving?
Anything already confirmed is stored, and confirmation happens continuously rather than at the end. What is at risk is only the last few seconds of typing.
The editor will not load at all, on a page that used to work.
Try it in a normal window with extensions off. A private window or a hard privacy extension can block what the live connection needs.
Somebody outside my workspace edited my document. How?
Everybody in the workspace can edit everything in it, and a link set to Can edit works for people without an account if you allowed that. Check the document's share settings and the workspace member list.
Can I work on a plane?
No. Write elsewhere and paste it in, or accept that the tab has to be connected.
