Version history
Read the document as it was, restore a version, and see how long versions are kept on your plan.
On this page
Press the clock icon in the editor toolbar to open History and inspect. The left tab is a timeline of saved versions, grouped by day, each with the time it was saved and who saved it. Nothing has to be turned on: versions are written as you work.
- 1
Open the clock icon
In a document or a spreadsheet, top right of the toolbar. On a narrow screen it is under the overflow menu as Version history.
- 2
Pick a version
Press it to read it in place, without touching the live document.
- 3
Press Restore
Nemi confirms first and tells you which moment you are going back to.
How versions are made#
- A version is written as the document saves, not on a schedule and not when you press something.
- Rapid edits by the same person within a couple of minutes collapse into one version, so a morning of writing is a readable list rather than four hundred entries.
- Each entry carries who made it. Entries from the AI connection carry an AI badge.
- Version history is best effort: if a snapshot cannot be written, your document still saves. Saving your work always wins over recording it.
How long versions are kept#
Retention is a plan entitlement, and it applies to documents, spreadsheets, canvases and forms alike.
| Plan | Version history kept for |
|---|---|
| Free | 7 days |
| Starter | 30 days |
| Creator | 90 days |
| Pro | 365 days |
| Max | Unlimited |
| Business | Unlimited |
Older versions are removed once they pass the window. See Plans.
Reading a version instead of restoring it#
Most of the time you do not want the old document back, you want one paragraph out of it. Open the version, select what you need, copy it, press Back, and paste it into the live document. Nothing about the live document changed while you were reading.
History and inspect
Appears on the version you hover, and asks for confirmation.
If the version you want is not there#
- It is older than your retention window. Check the table above against the date you are looking for. Upgrading does not bring back versions that have already been removed.
- You are in the wrong document. History belongs to one document. A copy of a document starts its own history.
- The document was deleted. Deleting a document deletes its history and its uploaded images with it, and that cannot be undone. Delete is only available to the owner for exactly this reason.
- It says no versions yet. The document has not been saved since it was created, or it was created through an import that has not been edited since.
For a version of a document you want to keep outside Nemi entirely, export it. Settings in the editor toolbar also offers a password-locked .nemi export, which is described in Sharing and publishing.
