In the call

The controls along the bottom: microphone, camera, screen sharing, hands, reactions, chat, pinning, layouts and what only the host can do.

On this page

Everything is in one bar along the bottom. Microphone and camera on the left, the things that involve other people in the middle, and Leave on the right, deliberately away from the rest.

Sharing your screen#

Press the screen button and pick a tab, a window or a whole screen. Sharing is a desktop feature: phone browsers do not offer it at all. Your camera keeps running while you share, so people can still see you talking over it.

  • Only Chromium browsers can carry the sound of what you are sharing, and only when you tick the box for it in the picker. Sharing a whole screen never carries sound in any browser.
  • A screen share keeps its quality when the room fills up. Cameras get quieter as more people join, because everybody is uploading to everybody, but the screen does not, since the screen is why people are looking.
  • To share a document or a board people can also draw on rather than just watch, use the whiteboard instead.

People, hands and reactions#

The People panel lists everyone, marks the host, shows who is muted and whose camera is off, and holds Copy the invite link so you can pull somebody in without leaving the call. Raising a hand puts a mark next to your name that stays until you lower it. Reactions float across the stage for a couple of seconds and are gone.

Chat, and sending a file#

Chat opens beside the stage and keeps the recent history of the meeting, so a late arrival is not lost. Signed-in participants can attach a file: it is uploaded into their own Nemi files and posted into the chat as a share link, up to 2 GB. That means a guest with no account can open it, and it still works tomorrow. Guests cannot attach files, because a file has to belong to an account.

The More menu. Captions and recording are only there when the host's account has them switched on.
  • Pin on any tile makes that person the big one for you only. Nobody else sees your pin. Press Esc or Unpin to let it go.
  • Follow the speaker puts whoever is talking in the large tile. Show everyone equally gives everybody the same size.
  • Float this call pops the call into a small window that stays on top while you work in another app.
  • A screen share takes the large tile automatically, because it is almost always the reason it was started.

What only the host can do#

ControlWhat it does
Mute someoneTurns their microphone off. They can turn it back on.
Remove someonePuts them out of the call.
Mute everyone elseOne press, everybody but the host.
Lock the meetingNobody new can join, even with the link.
Ask me before letting people inTurns the waiting room on or off during the call.
End the meeting for everyoneCloses the call for every participant at once.

When something goes wrong mid-call#

One tile showing a connection failure while the rest are fine is a route problem between those two browsers and nobody else's fault. Everybody sounding fine but nobody hearing you is almost always the wrong microphone or a permission that was never granted: leave and rejoin, and use the meter on the screen before the call. If the picture goes soft as people arrive, that is deliberate, since the camera budget drops as the room fills so the call keeps running on an ordinary connection.
