Meet
Joining a meeting
A link is all a guest needs: no account, no download. What the screen before the call is for, and what each refusal to let you in means.
On this page
Open the link. That is the whole requirement. There is no account to make, nothing to install and no plugin, on a laptop or on a phone. If you have a code rather than a link, open Meet and paste the code into the join box at the top of the page.
Open the link
The meeting name and who is already there are on screen immediately.
Check yourself over
Camera preview, a microphone meter that moves when you speak, and your name.
Join
Or ask to join, if the host admits people one at a time.
The screen before the call#
You get a preview of yourself before anybody sees you. Use it. It is the only place where fixing the wrong microphone costs nobody else any time.
- Press the microphone and camera buttons to arrive muted, or with the camera off, or both.
- The bar under the preview moves when you talk. If it does not move, the browser is listening to a different microphone, or it never got permission.
- If you have more than one camera or microphone, a picker appears for each. Pick before you join rather than after.
- With the camera on, you can set a blurred or replaced background here. See Backgrounds, blur and captions.
- Guests type a name. It is what everybody sees on your tile, and nothing else about you is asked for.
What each refusal means#
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| That password is not right | The meeting has a password and this is not it. | Ask the host. Nemi cannot tell you what it is. |
| This meeting is locked | The host locked it, usually because it already started. | Ask the host to unlock it, then try again. |
| This meeting is full | The call is at the number of people the host's plan fits. | Somebody has to leave first. |
| For signed-in Nemi accounts only | The host switched off guest access. | Sign in with the address the host expects, or ask them to allow guests. |
| That meeting does not exist any more | The link was deleted, or the code has a typo. | Check the code and ask for a fresh link. |
| Too many attempts | Too many wrong passwords in a short time. | Wait a minute and try again. |
Waiting to be let in#
If the meeting asks the host before letting people in, the button says Ask to join and you wait on a knock screen. The host sees you arrive and presses Let in. Nobody but the host can admit you, so if the host has not arrived yet, waiting is the only thing to do.
Browsers, phones and permissions#
- Any browser from the last two years is fine. Camera and microphone access needs a secure connection, and Meet says so rather than failing quietly.
- On a phone, camera, microphone, chat and everything else works. Sharing your screen does not, because phone browsers do not offer it.
- If the browser never asks for permission, it was refused earlier and remembered. Clear it in the site settings behind the padlock in the address bar, then reload.
- A private window or a strict privacy extension can block what Meet needs to hold the call together. If the room refuses to start, that is the first thing to rule out.
One tile stuck on a connection error while everybody else is fine means those two browsers could not find a route to each other, usually on a corporate or hotel network. Switching to another network, or off the office wifi to a phone connection, fixes it more often than anything you can change in the app. More in Meeting problems.
