Managing and revoking links

Press ⌘⇧L anywhere in Nemi (Ctrl+Shift+L on Windows and Linux) and the link manager opens on top of whatever you were doing. It lists every link you have made, grouped by workspace, and it is the only place you need for changing or ending one.

Three tabs#

• Download for ordinary share links.
• Embed for embed links, kept apart because they behave differently.
• Upload for upload links, the ones pointing at you.

Reading a card#

Every link is a card with its name, the workspace it belongs to, its URL and a copy button, a 30 day activity chart, and a row of small facts: how many files, how many downloads, how many opens, when it expires, who may open it, and badges for a password, a watermark, Trace or a review round. The label at the top is the status.

Editing a link#

The pencil opens a panel from the right with the settings grouped as General, Access and Password. Name, description and expiry are under General; who may open it and the list of approved addresses under Access; setting, changing or removing the password under Password. A Files section adds and removes files. Escape closes the panel without saving and leaves the link manager open.

Sharing files without adding them to your workspace#

Drag files from your computer onto the tray at the bottom of the screen and they are not uploaded. They stay on your device, the row says On your device, and you can convert or compress them from there without anything being added to your files.

Press Share and they are uploaded and tied to the link that is made. They never appear in your file browser, and they are deleted when the link is: revoke it, or let it lapse past its recovery period, and they are gone. They do count towards your storage for as long as the link exists, because we are storing them.

Replacing the file behind a link#

In the Files section, Replace beside a file puts a different one behind the same link. The address does not change, so the message you already sent keeps working and everyone who has it sees the new file the next time they open it. The old file stays in your workspace and is only detached from the link.

Anyone who opens the link within a month of the swap is told at the top of the page that it was updated and on what date, so somebody who downloaded the old version knows to take it again. That notice is written by Nemi and cannot be removed from the page. In Trace the downloads that happened before the swap are separated from the ones after it, which is how you see who is still holding the old file.

Revoking a link#

The bin icon deletes the link. You are asked to confirm, because it cannot be undone, and then it is over immediately: the page, the previews, the downloads, the zip and any embed of it all stop at once, in every browser that has it open. Anything Trace recorded for that link is deleted at the same moment.

Somebody holding the URL afterwards gets a plain dead end that does not say the link ever existed, who made it or what was on it. Deleting a link never deletes the files: they stay in your workspace exactly as they were.

Sharing the same files again#

A deleted link does not come back. Select the files again and make a new one, which gets a fresh URL and a fresh set of counts. This is usually the right move after a leak: revoke the old link so the copies in the wild go dead, then send a new one, with a password, to the people who should have it. If you were watching that link with Trace, note down what you need from the panel before you revoke, because the trace goes with the link.
