Passwords, expiry and download limits

Three separate limits can sit on one link, and they are checked independently: a password gates entry, an expiry date ends the link on a calendar, and a download limit ends it on a counter. Any of them can be added or removed later from the link manager.

Setting a password#

Open More in the share panel and type one into the Password field before you create the link. Visitors then land on a page that says This link is protected, with a single password box, and nothing about the files is shown until they get it right: not the file names, not the number of files, not the preview.

• You can add a password to a link that already exists, or change it, in the link manager under Password.
• To take one off, switch on Remove password in the same place and save.
• We store the password hashed and cannot read it back to you. If you have forgotten what you sent, set a new one and tell the recipient the new one.
• Send the password through a different channel from the link. A password in the same email is decoration.

Expiry#

The pill row at the top of the share panel is the expiry. Which choices you get depends on your plan, and a pill with a padlock on it links to the pricing page rather than doing nothing.

You can also set an exact date and time when editing an existing link, rather than picking from the pills. Clearing that field means no expiry, which only saves on a plan that allows Never.

Download limits#

Under More you can cap how many times a link may hand out a copy: 1, 3, 5 or 10. When the count is reached the link stops serving anything at all, including previews. A single file download, a folder zip, a download of everything at once and a save to a Nemi account each count as one. Opening the page and looking at a preview does not.

If you do not see the download limit buttons, that feature has not been switched on for your account yet.

What a visitor sees when a link is over#

Bringing an expired link back#

For 30 days after it expires, a link is recoverable rather than gone. In the link manager its card is marked Recoverable and carries a recover button; recovering puts it back online for 24 hours, which is enough to let a client finish a download they started too late. Recovery needs Creator or above.
