Using Nemi Mail in other mail apps
Read and send your Nemi Mail in Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Canary, Outlook or any other app that uses IMAP, with an app password.
On this page
Your Nemi Mail works in the mail app you already use, on your phone and on your computer. The app connects to Nemi over an encrypted connection, so what you see there is the same mail as in Nemi Mail on the web, and what you send from it goes out from your Nemi Mail address.
App passwords#
An app signs in with your Nemi Mail address as the user name and an app password as the password. Your normal way of signing in to Nemi does not work there. You make app passwords in Mail, Settings, Other mail apps: give each one a name, such as the app or the device it is for. It is shown once, in four groups of four letters, with a button to copy it. Copy it then: it is not shown again, and Nemi cannot show it to you later, because it only keeps a fingerprint of it. You can type it with or without the dashes.
- You can have 10 app passwords at a time. Each one shows when you made it, when it was last used and the last four letters.
- Revoke signs out every app that uses it within a minute, and nothing else. Remove the account from that app as well, or it keeps trying with the old password.
- Use your primary address as the user name. Any other address of yours works too.
Apple Mail on iPhone, iPad and Mac#
- 1
Open Nemi Mail on that device
In Safari on the iPhone, iPad or Mac you want to add the account to. Open Settings, Other mail apps.
- 2
Press Add to Apple Mail
Nemi makes a new app password named after the device, such as Apple Mail on iPhone, and puts it in a setup profile, so there is nothing to type. Your device downloads the profile.
- 3
Install the profile
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap Profile Downloaded and then Install. On a Mac, open System Settings, search for Profiles, and install Nemi Mail. Your device says the profile is not verified; that is expected.
- 4
Open Mail
Your Nemi Mail address is there, with your folders. To remove it later, remove the profile in the same place, and revoke its app password in Nemi.
Thunderbird, Canary, Outlook and most other apps#
- 1
Create an app password
In Settings, Other mail apps, type a name and press Create app password. Keep it on screen.
- 2
Add an account in the app
Type your name, your Nemi Mail address and the app password. Thunderbird, Canary and Outlook look up the server settings by themselves from your address.
- 3
If the app asks for the settings
Choose IMAP and type them in from the table below.
Server settings#
| Setting | Incoming mail (IMAP) | Outgoing mail (SMTP) |
|---|---|---|
| Server | imap.nemimail.com | smtp.nemimail.com |
| Port | 993 | 465, or 587 |
| Security | SSL/TLS | SSL/TLS on 465, STARTTLS on 587 |
| User name | Your full Nemi Mail address | Your full Nemi Mail address |
| Password | An app password | The same app password |
| Authentication | Normal password | Normal password |
The same settings, with copy buttons, are at the bottom of Settings, Other mail apps.
Sending from another app#
- Mail you send from an app goes out exactly like mail you send in Nemi Mail: the same daily limit, recipients per message and attachment size, and it is kept in your Sent folder.
- The From address has to be one of your own Nemi Mail addresses. Mail from any other address is refused.
- Bcc works as in any app: the people in Bcc get the message and nobody sees them.
- Your Nemi signature is not added, because the app adds its own. Set one up in the app if you want one.
- Track opens is never used for mail sent from another app.
- A message from another app can carry attachments up to your plan's attachment limit, and the app is told when one is larger. For bigger files, share them from Nemi Files and send the link.
Your folders in another app#
Nemi Mail keeps conversations together, and mail apps show single messages. So in an app, a message you received is in the folder its conversation is in, and a message you sent is in Sent. A conversation in Trash or Spam takes all its messages with it, the ones you sent too.
| In the app | In Nemi Mail |
|---|---|
| Inbox | Your inbox. With bundles on, that is Focus. |
| Newsletters, Receipts, Updates | The bundles, shown only while bundles are on. |
| Screener | The Screener. |
| Archive | Archive, without the conversations you filed in your own folders. |
| Sent | Every message you sent, from Nemi Mail or from an app. |
| Drafts | Your drafts. |
| Trash | Trash. |
| Junk | Spam. |
| Flagged | Every message of every flagged conversation. |
| Your own folders | Your folders, with their subfolders inside them. |
- Moving a message moves its whole conversation, in Nemi Mail and in the app.
- Deleting a message in an app moves its conversation to Trash. Deleting it in Trash deletes the whole conversation for good, as Delete forever does in Nemi Mail.
- Flagging a message flags its conversation, so every message in it shows the flag. Flag colours stay in Nemi Mail.
- Reading a message in an app marks it read in Nemi Mail too, and the other way round.
- Snoozed conversations are not shown in an app until they come back.
- A folder you make in an app is one of your own folders in Nemi Mail. Deleting a folder moves its conversations to Archive and deletes its subfolders, as it does in Nemi Mail. Inbox, Sent, Trash and the other folders above cannot be renamed or deleted.
- A draft you change in Nemi Mail shows up in the app as a new message in Drafts, in place of the old one. Files you attached from Nemi Files and Nemi items in a draft are not shown in the app; files you uploaded into it are.
- A message an app saves into a folder, such as a copy of mail it sent through another server, counts toward your Nemi Mail storage and starts a conversation of its own. The copy an app files in Sent of mail it sent through Nemi is not stored twice.
- Search in an app finds whole words: invoice finds invoice, invo does not.
- New mail shows up in an open app within a few seconds. An account can have 20 app connections at a time, and an app that does nothing for 30 minutes is disconnected and connects again by itself.
