Using your own domain
Send and receive mail at your own domain: add it, publish the DNS records, and claim addresses on it.
With your own domain you can have addresses like you@yourcompany.com in Nemi Mail, including names such as info and support that are reserved on the Nemi Mail domain. A domain can belong to only one Nemi account at a time, and you prove it is yours before anything else happens.
Setting it up#
- 1
Add the domain
Settings, Custom domains, Add a domain. Type the domain you own, without www.
- 2
Prove it is yours
Add the TXT record shown at
_nemi-mail.yourdomain, then press I added it, check now. Nothing about your mail changes until this record is found. - 3
Add the remaining records
Once the domain is proven, the full list appears, each with a copy button. Add them all at your DNS provider. If your provider takes a pasted zone file, Copy all as a zone file copies every record at once.
- 4
Wait for the checks
This page checks again every half minute while it is open, and Nemi also checks by itself every ten minutes. You can press Check again at any time. Most providers publish changes within an hour; some take a day.
- 5
Claim addresses on it
When the domain shows as verified, Settings, Addresses lets you pick it when you add an address or an alias.
The records#
| Type | Name | What it does | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| TXT | _nemi-mail.yourdomain | Proves the domain is yours | Yes |
| CNAME, three of them | token._domainkey.yourdomain | Signs your mail so it is trusted | Yes |
| MX | bounce.yourdomain | Bounce handling | Yes |
| TXT | bounce.yourdomain | Says Nemi may send bounces for you | Yes |
| MX | yourdomain | Receives your mail | Yes |
| TXT | yourdomain | Says Nemi may send for you (SPF) | Recommended |
| TXT | _dmarc.yourdomain | Tells others what to do with forgeries (DMARC) | Recommended |
Copy the exact values from the settings screen: the three signing records are unique to your domain.
If something changes later#
Nemi keeps checking a verified domain once a day. If a required record disappears, the domain shows Something is missing and sending from it stops until the record is back; mail keeps arriving for 30 days meanwhile. Keep the _nemi-mail TXT record in place too: when it is gone and the domain's mail no longer points at Nemi either, the domain is disconnected after 14 days, so that whoever owns the domain next can use it. Adding the record again reconnects it. Remove takes the domain out of Nemi Mail and releases its addresses.
