Addresses, aliases and Hide my address
How many addresses you can have, what an alias is for, and how a hidden address keeps your real one out of a shop's mailing list.
On this page
Everything here lives in Settings, Addresses. There are three kinds of address, and all of them deliver into the same mailbox.
| Kind | What it is | Counts toward |
|---|---|---|
| Address | A full address you can send from and receive at. One of them is the default for new messages. | Addresses |
| Alias | A second name for one of your addresses, for a role or a project. Mail to it arrives in your inbox. | Aliases |
| Hide my address | A random address for one website or shop, so it never learns your real one. | Aliases |
Plus addressing works on every address#
Mail to name+anything@ reaches name@ without any setup, which is a quick way to see who passed your address on. Because of that, an address you claim cannot contain a plus sign itself.
Hide my address#
- 1
Say what it is for
Optionally name the website it is for. Mail to the hidden address from that website reaches you; mail from anywhere else goes to the Screener, which is how you notice an address that was sold or leaked.
- 2
Press Make a hidden address
Nemi Mail makes a random address and shows it to you once, ready to copy.
- 3
Burn it when you are done
Burn it stops everything sent to it from reaching you again. A burned address still counts toward your aliases, because it keeps working for you by turning mail away.
Giving an address up#
Give up this address (in the address's More menu) or Give up next to an alias releases it. It stops receiving mail, and it is never given to anybody else, so nobody can ever receive mail meant for you there. The same is true of every address of an account that is deleted. You can give up three addresses or aliases in any 30 days and add new ones in their place straight away. Beyond that, one you give up keeps counting toward your allowance until 30 days after you gave it up.
Changing your username#
Your Nemi Mail address does not change when you change your Nemi username. The people who write to you have your address saved, so renaming it would break every one of those. After you change your username, Mail offers once to add the new name as an alias, for example newname@nemimail.com next to your address. Press Add to add it, or Not now to leave things as they are. The alias counts toward your aliases; if they are all in use, Mail says so and you can make room in Settings, Addresses. The offer only appears when the new name is still free.
