Pictures, links and privacy
Why pictures do not load until you ask, how links show where they lead, and what Nemi keeps of your mail.
On this page
A picture that a message loads from somewhere else tells the sender that you opened it, when, and often where. So pictures do not load until you press Show images on a message, or choose to always show them from that sender, which applies to mail that proves it really comes from them. When they do load, Nemi fetches them for you, so the sender sees Nemi and not your address or your browser. Known tracking pixels are not loaded even then. You can change the default in Settings, General.
Messages are cleaned of anything that could run before they are shown, and they are shown in a sealed frame where no script can run and no form can send what you type anywhere. In dark mode, light mail is recoloured for reading, while logos and brand colours keep their own colours.
Links#
Pressing a link can first show where it really leads, so a link whose text says one website and whose address says another is easy to spot before you go there.
What Nemi keeps#
- Your messages and attachments are encrypted by Nemi before they are stored, and the subject and text are encrypted in our database too.
- Search works on fingerprints of the words rather than the words themselves, made with a key that belongs to your mailbox alone.
- Mail is received and sent in the European Union, in Ireland.
- Your mail stays until you delete it. Deleting it from Trash or Spam removes it for good.
