Knowing when mail is opened

Turn on Track opens for a message you send, see when it was opened, and what Apple Mail does to the count.

On this page

Track opens tells you when a message you sent has been opened. It works for every recipient, whatever mail app they use, by adding one invisible picture to the end of the message. When their mail app loads that picture, Nemi Mail counts an open. You decide per message, and it is off unless you turn it on.

  1. 1

    Write your message

Press c, or New message, or reply to a conversation.

  2. 2

    Turn on Track opens

Press More at the bottom of the message and choose Track opens. While it is on, an eye shows at the bottom of the message; press the eye to turn it off again.

  3. 3

    Send it

Opens are counted from the moment the message leaves.

To have every new message start with Track opens on, turn on Track opens in Settings, General. You can still turn it off for a single message in the composer.

Seeing the opens#

  • In the list, a conversation with a tracked message shows an eye with the number of opens.
  • In the conversation, under the message you sent, one line says how often it was opened and when last, for example Opened 3 times, last Tue 14:02. Press it to see each open with the time and the kind of mail app: Apple Mail, Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, Nemi Mail or another mail app.
  • The first open shows in your notifications, with the recipient's name when you sent it to one person. After that you hear about the same message at most once an hour.
  • A message to several people carries one picture for all of them, so it says Opened by someone: Nemi Mail cannot tell which of them it was.
  • Opens within a minute of each other count as one. Opening your own copy in Sent never counts, in Nemi Mail or in another mail app connected to it.

Apple Mail and other caveats#

  • A recipient whose mail app does not load pictures is never counted, even after reading the message. No open is not proof that nobody read it.
  • Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo load pictures through their own servers, so you see which of them it was and nothing about where the recipient is.
  • Track opens is only for mail sent from a Nemi Mail address. It is not available when you send from a linked Gmail, Outlook or other account.
  • Nemi Mail never stores the internet address or the browser of the person who opened your message. It records when, and which kind of mail app.
  • Opens are deleted with the message, and after 180 days.

When the recipient uses Nemi Mail#

Nemi Mail never loads tracking pictures for its own readers. When somebody on Nemi Mail opens a message you tracked, in Nemi Mail or in a mail app connected to it, Nemi Mail tells you it was read instead, shown as Nemi Mail. They can turn this off in Settings, General, with Let senders see when you read their mail, and then you are not told.

Using it responsibly#

Tracking whether somebody opened your mail is personal data about them. You are responsible for having a lawful reason to do it and for telling people where the law asks you to, and you must not use it where that is not allowed. The terms of service, section 4j, and the privacy policy, section 3.24, say exactly what is recorded and who is responsible for what.
