Appearance: theme, colour and background

Open Settings, Style. Everything on that tab is about how Nemi looks on your account, and it applies to every app: Files, Docs, Sheets, Calendar, Gallery and the rest all follow it.

Light, dark and System#

System follows your device, so Nemi turns dark when your laptop does in the evening. Light and dark are fixed choices that ignore the device.

Daylight#

Daylight follows the clock instead of your device. It is light through the day and dark at night, and the canvas the app sits on takes a different tint at five points in the day: pale and cool at dawn, cooler through the morning, brighter in the afternoon, warm at dusk, and a deep near-black at night. Everything else, the text, the panels, the buttons, is the ordinary light or dark theme, so nothing changes about how the app reads.

The times are fixed and use the clock on the device you are reading on, so Nemi turns at the same hour whether or not your laptop switches. It steps on the hour rather than fading, so the change is over before you have looked up, and a tab left open overnight turns on its own.

• Dawn runs from 05:00, morning from 08:00, afternoon from 12:00, dusk from 17:00, and night from 21:00 until 05:00.
• Daylight is dark at night, so anything you have set for dark mode applies then too.
• Set Contrast to More or High in Settings, Accessibility and Daylight drops the tint, using the plain light or dark canvas instead. Those contrast levels are measured against a known background, so tinting it would move every one of them.
• Set Motion to Reduced on the same tab and the tint is dropped for the same reason: that setting is how you ask the interface to hold still.

The choice is stored twice on purpose. It is kept on the device you are using, which is what carries it between the Nemi apps as you move around, and it is kept on your account, which is what carries it to a different computer. It is also applied before the page draws, so a dark user never gets a white flash on the way in.

Boring mode#

Boring mode strips the colour out of the interface for people who would rather look at their work than at the app. It has two parts you can use separately once it is on: Boring folders, which paints every folder one colour you choose from eight presets, and Boring files, which turns file icons neutral grey. It is a preference on your account, so nobody else in the workspace sees the change.

The colour and icon of a workspace#

A workspace has its own colour and its own picture, and those are not personal settings: they are how everybody in the workspace tells it apart from the next one. Open the workspace switcher at the top of the sidebar, choose Manage, and the General tab holds the name, a full colour slider with quick presets, and an icon you can upload. On the plans that allow an animated profile photo, a workspace icon can be a short looping video too.

The ring around your photo#

One switch on this tab is not about how Nemi looks to you but about what other people see: Show your ring to people you work with. The ring around your profile photo changes colour with what you are doing, and this decides whether your contacts and workspace members see it. When the theme keeps resetting#

• Private windows and hard privacy extensions block the storage the theme is kept in on your device. The account copy still applies once you are signed in, but a signed-out page will be light.
• Clearing site data clears the device copy. Open Settings once and the account copy is written back.
• On System, nothing is wrong if Nemi changes at sunset: that is your operating system switching, and Nemi is following it.
• On Daylight, the canvas changing on the hour is the theme working. If it is not changing at all, open Settings, Accessibility and check Contrast and Motion: More, High or Reduced each switch the tint off deliberately.
