Notifications on your devices
Get notified in your browser or on your phone with Nemi closed, choose what interrupts you, set quiet hours, and fix notifications that do not arrive.
On this page
Everything the bell collects can also reach you outside Nemi: as a notification from your browser on a computer or an Android phone, from Nemi on the Home Screen of an iPhone or iPad, and in the Nemi iPhone apps. It arrives with no Nemi tab open, within a few seconds for new mail, comments and uploads, and on time for calendar reminders.
Notifications are switched on per browser, because the permission belongs to the browser. What they cover and when they stay quiet is one choice for your whole account, and the iPhone apps follow it too.
Turn them on in a browser#
- 1
Open Settings, Notifications
The block at the top, Notifications on this device, says whether this browser can show them and whether they are on.
- 2
Press Turn on
Your browser asks whether Nemi may show notifications. Choose Allow. Nemi only ever asks when you press this button, never when a page opens.
- 3
Press Send a test notification
A test arrives within a few seconds. If it does not, see the troubleshooting below.
Do this once in every browser where you want them: your laptop, your work computer, your phone. Every browser where they are on is listed under Your browsers, with Remove for one you no longer use. After you have used Nemi for a few days, the bell also offers to turn them on once. Not now is remembered on your account, so it is not asked again on another device.
On an iPhone or iPad#
On iPhone and iPad, notifications from a website only work once the website is on your Home Screen, from iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4. In a Safari tab, Settings, Notifications shows these steps instead of the button.
- 1
Open Nemi in Safari
Go to nemilab.com and sign in.
- 2
Add it to your Home Screen
Tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen, then Add.
- 3
Open Nemi from the new icon
Sign in there if you are asked. It is a separate place from Safari, with its own sign-in.
- 4
Turn notifications on
Open Settings, Notifications and press Turn on, then Allow.
What each switch covers#
| Switch | What it covers |
|---|---|
| New mail in the Inbox of a Nemi Mail address, snoozes that end and replies you are waiting on | |
| Mentions and comments | Comments on your documents, sheets, canvases and photos |
| Shares and downloads | Something shared with you, a link of yours opened, decisions on your shares, resend requests and Beam |
| Uploads | Files that arrive through your upload links |
| Rooms | Uploads, messages and finished requests in your rooms |
| Calendar reminders | The reminders on your events, with no Nemi tab open |
| Meet | Anything Meet notifies you about |
| Workspace invites | An invitation to join a workspace or a shared folder |
A notification about mail never shows the subject or who it is from, only that there is new mail and how much. New mail in a bundle (newsletters, receipts, updates), in the Screener, in Spam or marked read by one of your rules does not notify you. Several messages that arrive together become one notification that keeps its count up to date. Mail in a Gmail, Outlook or other account you linked to Nemi Mail does not notify you here; that provider’s own app already does.
A calendar reminder shows the event and when it starts, not where. If a Nemi Calendar tab is open as well, you get one notification, not two. Calendar reminders and invites go to browsers only; the Nemi iPhone apps keep their own.
Quiet hours#
Switch on Quiet hours and choose From and Until. Between those times nothing is sent to any of your browsers or to the iPhone apps, and what happened waits in the bell. Times run across midnight when Until is earlier than From, so 22:00 until 07:00 covers the night. They are in the time zone of the browser where you last changed a setting on this screen, which it shows.
Turning a switch off or setting quiet hours never changes the bell: it still collects everything, so nothing is lost by being quiet.
The badge on the app icon#
Where your device supports it, Nemi installed as an app shows the number of unread notifications on its icon. Reading them in the bell clears it.
When notifications do not arrive#
Settings says Blocked by this browser.
You, or the browser on your behalf, chose Block when it asked. Nemi cannot ask again, so the switch is in the browser. In Chrome and Edge, click the icon to the left of the address bar, open Site settings and set Notifications to Allow. In Firefox, click the same icon and clear the Blocked setting next to Send notifications. In Safari on a Mac, open Safari Settings, Websites, Notifications. Then reload Nemi and press Turn on.
There is no Turn on button on my iPhone.
Safari in a tab cannot show notifications from a website. Add Nemi to your Home Screen and open it from there, as described above.
The test arrives but nothing else does.
Check the switches under What to notify you about and whether quiet hours are on. A notification is also not shown while you are looking at the very page it is about.
Nothing shows, not even the test.
Your device may be holding them back. On a Mac, open System Settings, Notifications, choose your browser and allow notifications. On Windows, open Settings, System, Notifications. On an iPhone, open Settings, Notifications, Nemi. A Focus or Do Not Disturb mode also silences them until it ends.
A browser is listed as Stopped receiving.
Several notifications in a row could not be delivered to it, so Nemi stopped trying. Open Nemi in that browser and they start again by themselves, or press Remove if you no longer use it.
I signed out and notifications stopped.
Signing out turns them off in that browser, because they belong to your account. Sign in again and press Turn on.
What a notification contains, who delivers it and how long anything about it is kept is described in the privacy policy, under Notifications on your devices.
