Reading comfort and accessibility
Text size, contrast, motion, underlined links, reading spacing, focus ring, tap targets and transparency, on every device you sign in on.
On this page
Nemi has its own set of reading and interaction preferences, on top of what your operating system already asks for. Open Settings, Accessibility, or press Alt Shift A anywhere in the app for the quick panel. Both write the same settings, there is no save button, and you judge them by looking at the result.
Start from a preset#
Four ready-made combinations sit at the top. They are ordinary changes, not modes: pick one and then keep adjusting anything you like underneath.
Every setting, and what it does#
| Setting | Choices | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Text size | 100, 110, 125, 150, 175 or 200 percent | Type gets larger while boxes keep their size, so nothing is pushed out of reach |
| Contrast | System, More, High | More firms up borders and secondary text. High forces near-black on near-white, or the inverse in dark mode, with an outline on every control |
| Motion | System, Reduced | Reduced removes animation and page transitions even when your device does not ask for it |
| Underline links | On or off | Links in body text are marked by more than colour alone |
| Reading spacing | On or off | Taller lines and wider letter spacing in text |
| Bold focus ring | On or off | A thicker outline that also shows for pointer and switch input, not only for the Tab key |
| Highlight focused row | On or off | Tints the row, card or menu item your keyboard is inside |
| Larger tap targets | On or off | Small buttons, checkboxes and menu rows grow to at least 44 pixels |
| Reduce transparency | On or off | Frosted panels become solid, so text never sits over moving content |
| Announce updates | On by default | Speaks page changes and status messages to screen readers |
Text size is worth a sentence of its own. Nemi does not zoom the page, because zooming would push content off a screen that cannot scroll any further. It scales the type and leaves the layout where it is, which is why 200 percent gives you roomier text rather than a broken window.
Where the settings live#
They are stored on the device you are using, which carries them as you move between the Nemi apps, and on your account, which carries them to your next device as soon as you sign in. They are applied before the page draws, so a page never appears at 100 percent and then jumps. Reset to defaults, at the bottom of the tab, puts everything back and is greyed out when nothing has been changed.
If something is still hard to use#
- Text that ignores the size setting is a bug worth reporting, not something you have to work around. Tell us which screen it was on.
- In documents, spreadsheets and canvases the editor keeps its own keys, so Alt Shift A while typing may be captured by the editor. Press Escape first.
- For screen reader problems, say which reader and which browser: the two together usually identify the cause.
