Dictating instead of typing
Press the microphone and talk: the words appear where you are writing as you speak. Works in Nemi AI, in documents and in long text fields, and uses your monthly voice minutes.
On this page
Wherever you write something long in Nemi, there is a microphone. Press it, talk, and what you say is written where you are writing, while you are still saying it. Nothing is sent or saved until you would have sent or saved it anyway: dictation only types for you.
Where you can dictate#
- Nemi AI: the microphone sits next to the attach buttons under the message box. The words go into the box, and you still press send.
- Documents: press Dictate in the bar at the bottom of the page. Words appear at your cursor in a shimmer while you speak and become ordinary text at the end of each sentence, so the people editing with you see finished sentences rather than a word being guessed at.
- Long text fields: in the bottom right corner of fields such as event and task notes, an email you are writing, feedback, a link description or message, a room note or a room message, the text on a share page, your folio and the prompts for an AI form.
It is deliberately not offered on fields for a name, a title, an address or a password. Those are quicker to type, and a misheard letter there is a wrong record rather than a typo.
Dictating#
- 1
Put your cursor where the words should go
Anything you have selected is replaced, the same as typing would.
- 2
Press the microphone
The first time, your browser asks whether Nemi may use the microphone. The button turns while it connects.
- 3
Talk
A small waveform moves with your voice and a clock runs. Punctuation and capitals are added for you.
- 4
Press stop, or Esc
Whatever is on screen at that moment is kept, including the last sentence if it was not finished.
Saying where a line ends#
Say new line at the end of a sentence to start a new line, and new paragraph to start a new paragraph. The Dutch nieuwe regel and nieuwe alinea work too. They only count at the end of what you said, so "we need a new line of products" is written out as a sentence.
Nemi tells the transcription which languages to expect from the languages your browser is set to prefer. If you dictate in a language your browser does not list, add it in your browser settings.
Voice minutes#
Dictation uses your voice minutes: one allowance per calendar month that belongs to your account, whichever workspace you are in. Live captions in meetings you host use the same minutes. Hovering the microphone says how much is left this month, and Settings, Usage shows the month in full: what you used, how much of it was dictation and how much was captions, and when it resets.
| Plan | Voice minutes per month |
|---|---|
| Free | 5 minutes |
| Starter | 2 hours |
| Creator | 3 hours |
| Pro | 5 hours |
| Max | 8 hours |
| Business | 25 hours |
Time is counted while the microphone is streaming, not while you are reading back. The full comparison is in Plans and what is in them.
Dictation stops on its own after a minute in which no words were heard, so a microphone left running in an empty room does not spend your month. When the minutes run out, dictation stops, what you said so far stays where it was, and the message says which plan the minutes belong to. They come back at the start of the next calendar month.
Where your voice goes#
While you dictate, your browser sends what your microphone hears to a transcription service in the European Union and the text comes straight back to your browser. The audio does not pass through Nemi and we never hold it, and we do not keep the text anywhere except in what you write it into. Your microphone hears the room, so anything else said nearby while dictation runs is sent too. Section 3.9a of the Privacy Policy sets out exactly what is sent and to whom.
When it does not work#
There is no microphone button.
Your plan needs voice minutes, and your browser has to be able to record audio. If both are true and it is still missing, it has not been switched on for your account yet.
It says Nemi needs your microphone.
Your browser refused the microphone, usually because the request was dismissed once. Press the camera or lock symbol in the address bar, allow the microphone for Nemi, and press the button again.
The words come out in the wrong language.
Add the language you speak to your browser's preferred languages, near the top of the list, and start dictating again.
