The ring around your profile photo
What the coloured ring around a profile photo means, who can see yours, and the one switch that turns it off.

Your profile photo has a ring around it, and the ring is live: it changes colour with what you are doing in Nemi right now. Several things can be true at once, so the ring is a gradient and each thing takes a slice of it. It used to be a fixed colour for the plan your account was on; it is not that any more.
The ring turns, and it turns faster the busier you are: a call moves visibly quicker than simply having Nemi open. If you have asked for less motion, in Nemi or on your device, it holds still and shows the same colours. See Reading comfort and accessibility.
What the colours mean#

Colour is never the only carrier: hover a ring and it tells you the same thing in words.
Where you see other people rings#
- Contacts, on the list of people and on a person page.
- When you pick who to send to: the suggestions under an email or @username field carry a ring, which is the moment it is worth the most. Somebody who is in a meeting right now is somebody who will not read it for an hour.
You can only see the ring of somebody you already work with in Nemi: a person in your contacts, or a member of a workspace you are in. There is no way to look up a stranger this way.
What it never shows#
- Which meeting, which document or which file. The ring says "in a meeting", never which one.
- Which workspace you are working in, or which page you are on.
- Anything at all once you close Nemi. Your browser only says what you are doing while a Nemi tab is open in front of you, so the ring goes quiet by itself when you walk away.
- A history. Nothing is kept: there is no record of what you were doing yesterday, for you or for anybody else.
Turning it off#
Open Settings, Style and switch off Show your ring to people you work with. Your own ring keeps working on your own screen, storage included.
Off is silent on purpose. To everybody else you look like somebody who is not in Nemi right now, rather than like somebody who has switched their presence off: a badge saying so would be a status of its own, and it would be read as hiding.
When somebody ring stays grey#
- They are not in Nemi at the moment, or their tab is in the background.
- They have switched sharing off.
- The contact is saved as an email address with no Nemi account behind it. There is nothing to show.
- It has not been switched on for their account yet.
