Photo limits and quality
How many photos each plan holds, the resolution they are stored at, and why the count on the meter can be larger than the library in front of you.

Two numbers decide what a plan buys in Gallery: how many photos the library may hold, and the longest edge a stored photo may have. Photos also use ordinary storage, the same allowance files and documents use, but for most people the count is what runs out last and the resolution is what they notice first.

The photo count includes what is in the trash. Full details of every plan are in Plans and what is in them.
"Longest edge" is the longer side of the stored photo. On Free, a 4032 by 3024 phone photo is stored at 1024 by 768. Nothing is ever made larger: a small photo stays its own size on every plan. "Full resolution" keeps what the camera captured, up to a ceiling of 16384 px on the long edge, which no consumer camera reaches.
The meter, and its two numbers#

The photo cap belongs to an account, not to a workspace. It counts every library owned by the same person, so making another workspace does not mint another allowance. That is why the meter can read 128,400 while the grid holds 3,200: you are looking at one of that account's libraries.
The plan that applies is the workspace owner's, exactly as with storage. Two consequences worth knowing before you import a shoot into somebody else's workspace: their plan sets the resolution your photos are stored at, and your upload spends their allowance rather than yours. Being invited by somebody on a bigger plan does not raise the cap on a library you own.
What the quality actually looks like#
Photos are stored as AVIF at a quality that is not a plan lever: a photo on Free is compressed with the same care as one on Business, it is simply smaller. An average phone photo lands somewhere in the low hundreds of kilobytes rather than several megabytes, which is what makes keeping a hundred thousand of them affordable. Open any photo and press i to see what it was uploaded at, what it is stored at, and how much the compression saved.
When the library is full#
The import stopped and said my gallery is full
The photo cap was reached. Empty the trash first, since trashed photos still count, then delete what you do not want, then consider a bigger plan.
I have plenty of storage left and it still refuses
Storage and the photo count are two separate limits. A library of small photos can hit the count long before the gigabytes.
Does a photo count twice if it is in three albums?
No. An album is a view of photos that already exist, and a photo in ten albums is still one photo.
Do photos count towards my storage as well?
Yes, the compressed photo and its thumbnail do. It is the same allowance as files and documents. See Storage and usage.
Can I raise just the photo count?
No, the two move together with the plan. Changing plan takes effect immediately for new uploads.
If the numbers on the meter look wrong rather than inconvenient, tell us at support@nemilab.com and say which workspace you were in. That is a bug worth chasing, not something to work around.
