Adding photos
Photos are compressed on your device before they are uploaded, the camera details are read out first, and duplicates are recognised rather than filed twice.

Press Add photos for a selection of files, Import a folder for a whole tree, or drag either straight onto the window. Nemi takes as many as you throw at it: an import of tens of thousands is what the queue is built for.
Your browser reads the camera details
Capture time, camera, lens, exposure, orientation and location, out of the original file, before anything is changed.

To AVIF, at your plan's longest edge. Several at once, on your own idle cores.

Nemi checks what arrived and files it
The stored file is read back to confirm its format and size, and then it appears in the grid.
The dock in the corner counts the run: how many are compressing on this device, how much space the compression saved, and, expanded, exactly which files were duplicates, which were skipped and which failed. Every file you dropped is accounted for, because an import you cannot check is no use as a backup. Try again retries only what failed.
What Gallery accepts#
- JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, TIFF, BMP and HEIC or HEIF from an iPhone.
- Up to 200 MB per source file, measured before compression. Above that you are almost certainly holding a RAW export or a stitched panorama, and neither belongs in a compressed library. Put those in Files instead.
- Anything that is not a photo is counted as skipped and listed in the dock. It is never silently dropped, and it is never uploaded.
When your browser cannot do the compression#
Not every browser can write an AVIF, and most cannot read an iPhone HEIC at all. When yours cannot, that photo takes the other route: the original is sent to our server, converted there, and the uploaded original is discarded immediately afterwards. It is never stored. The import still works, it is just slower. Chrome and Edge compress locally today; Firefox and Safari generally fall back.
The same photo twice#
Before a photo is uploaded its content is compared against what the library already holds. A match is counted as a duplicate and skipped, so re-running the same import, or a colleague importing the shoot you both have, costs a moment instead of a second copy of everything. Matching is per library, so the same photo can exist in two different workspaces.
Leaving the location behind#
At the bottom of the sidebar is a switch that says Location is kept on upload or Location is removed on upload. Turn it on and the coordinates and the altitude are removed on your device, before anything is sent, so we never receive them at all. It applies to photos added afterwards and changes nothing about photos already in the library. The setting is remembered on the device you set it on.
When an import goes wrong#
