Albums and organising

Albums, stars, selecting a run of photos, and moving or copying photos into another workspace library.

On this page

A photo is in the library from the moment it is uploaded, filed by the day it was taken. Albums are the extra layer on top: a photo can be in several of them, and taking it out of one changes nothing about the photo.

Albums#

  1. 1

    Select the photos

Click one, then shift-click another to take everything between them. Cmd-click or ctrl-click adds or removes a single photo.

  2. 2

    Press Add to album

Pick an existing album or make a new one at the bottom of the list. Dragging a selection onto an album in the sidebar does the same thing.

  3. 3

Open the album from the sidebar

Every album lists its photo count next to it. Inside an album the selection bar gains a Remove from album action.

Any member of the workspace can create an album and rename one. Deleting an album is limited to whoever created it and the workspace owner, and deleting an album never deletes photos: the album is removed and the photos stay in the library. A library can hold up to 500 albums.

Stars, and what a selection can do#

The bar offers Restore and Delete forever.

The bar appears as soon as one photo is selected and says how many you have. On a phone it wraps onto a second line rather than hiding actions off the edge.

A star is the library's, not yours: Favourites is one shared list, the way the albums are. If you want a view of only your own work, use Added by me in the sidebar.

Moving photos into another library#

A photo lives in exactly one workspace. Where the feature is switched on for your account, Move or copy in the selection bar sends photos to another workspace library without downloading and re-uploading them, which would cost a second round of compression and lose the capture details along the way. If you do not see the action, it has not been switched on for your account yet.

Either way you have to be a member of both workspaces with permission to add to the destination, and either way the photo arrives with its capture time, camera details and location intact.

Photos the destination already holds are skipped rather than duplicated, and the destination's photo cap is checked before anything is written, so a full library refuses the transfer instead of half accepting it.
