Searching your photos
Type what is in the picture. The model that recognises it runs in your own browser, and no photograph of yours is ever sent anywhere to be analysed.

Type into the search field above the grid and describe what is in the picture: red bicycle, beach at sunset, whiteboard. Nothing has to be tagged first. Results come back ordered by how close each photo is, with a line marking where the looser matches begin, because a match is a likeness rather than a label: a fox can turn up for dog.
Once you have searched, two filters appear next to the count. When narrows to a year, and Added by narrows to one member of the workspace, which only appears when there is more than one person to choose from. A search covers the library of the workspace you are in.
Where the reading happens#
This normally means a company running your photographs through its own image recognition. That is not what happens here, and the difference is the point of the feature.
Your device looks at the photo
A small model runs in your browser while the photo is already being compressed. The picture is never sent anywhere to be analysed.
It produces about five hundred numbers
Roughly half a kilobyte. Not a description, not tags, and not something the photo can be rebuilt from.
Your search words become the same kind of numbers
On your device, again. The words you typed never reach us.
Nemi compares numbers and returns photos
So we do not learn the picture, and we do not learn what you were looking for.
The first search on a device#
The model has to be downloaded to your browser once, which is tens of megabytes and starts the moment you put the cursor in the search field. It says so while it happens. On a phone on mobile data, that is worth knowing before you start.
Photos added before search existed#
A photo is read as it is uploaded, so anything already in the library when search arrived has never been looked at and cannot turn up in a result. A strip under the search field says how many that is and offers to fix it.

Press Prepare them
Your device fetches each older photo and reads it, exactly as it would have done at upload time. You can keep using Gallery while it runs.

It pauses while the tab is in the background or an upload is running, and carries on by itself.

It is real bandwidth and real work on your machine, so it is always offered and never assumed.
When search does not find anything#
I know the photo is there and it does not come up
Check the strip or the information panel for how many photos have been looked at. A library that predates search finds almost nothing until it has been prepared once.
It says search cannot run in this browser
The model needs a reasonably recent browser. Update it, or search from another device: what one device prepares is available to the whole workspace, so the work is not repeated.
Preparing runs for a moment and offers itself again
It always ends with a sentence saying why, and the reasons need different fixes. Read that line and send it to support@nemilab.com if it is not obvious.
Can I search for a person by name or face?
No. There is no facial recognition and no naming of people anywhere in Nemi. Search by what is around them: a place, a colour, an object, an event.
I do not have a search field at all
Photo search has not been switched on for your account yet.
The numbers behind a photo are deleted with the photo, at the same moment and by the same mechanism, and they go when you close your account too.
