Video calls that stay between the people in them. Browser to browser. Guests just open a link.
Meet connects the people in a call directly to one another. Audio, video and screens travel between browsers, encrypted from end to end, and no server of ours can see or hear them. That is not a setting, it is the architecture. Live captions are the one exception, and the host decides per meeting whether to make it.

No server of ours can see or hear the call
We introduce the browsers to each other and step out. On a network that will not let two browsers reach each other, a relay we run passes the encrypted stream along without being able to read it and keeps none of it. So we could not produce a recording of a call if we were asked for one. Recording a meeting is something Meet does: it runs on one participant's own device, and the file lands in their own Nemi files, where it counts against their storage like anything else.
Backgrounds on the device, captions by choice
Blur and replacement run in the browser and nothing extra leaves it. Live captions are the exception and are stated as one: with them on, the meeting’s audio is sent to a transcription service in the EU, the host turns them on, and everybody in the call is shown that they are running. Meeting notes and the whiteboard are ordinary Nemi documents, so they are still there tomorrow.
Guests need the link and nothing else
No account, no download, no plugin. Screen sharing, a shared whiteboard and meeting notes are built in. Up to ten people in a call depending on your plan, which is the honest limit of a direct connection between everybody.

The stage rearranges itself around a screen
The tiles are worked out for the window you actually have rather than picked from a handful of fixed layouts. Five faces in a wide window come back as three over two, with the short row centred rather than pushed to the left. The moment somebody shares, their screen takes the main slot and every face travels down into one rail, and the tiles slide to their new places instead of blinking out and coming back.
Blur happens in your browser, captions are the host’s call
Your camera picture is blurred or replaced in your own tab on the way into the call, so the changed frame is the only one anybody else ever sees, and the model that does it is fetched the first time you press Blur and never before that. Captions work the other way and we say so rather than letting the page imply otherwise: switching them on mixes the meeting’s audio in the host’s browser and sends it to a transcription service in the EU. It is the host’s switch, it is off until they press it, and everybody in the call is shown while it is on.

When captions have been on, leaving writes the meeting into a Nemi document named after it: the transcript with each speaker's lines gathered into a paragraph, then the chat, then any polls with their counts. The whiteboard is a Nemi document too, a Canvas one, so what you drew together is still there tomorrow rather than dying with the call.
