Scanning the code is how the two browsers find each other. That is all we carry: once they have, the files go straight from one device to the other. Where a network refuses a direct connection, a relay forwards the traffic instead, and because the connection is encrypted end to end the relay passes on bytes it cannot read and keeps none of them.
Nothing is called done until it has been checked
Every file is checked on both devices as it goes across, and the sender does not report a transfer finished until the receiving end has confirmed that each file arrived whole. A file that cannot be confirmed is reported as exactly that, rather than quietly counted as delivered.
It carries text as well as files
A link, a verification code, a paragraph typed on the wrong machine: send it and it is on the other screen, with a copy button waiting. It goes over the same connection as the files, before, during or after a transfer, and it is never stored anywhere.
