Signing in to apps with Nemi
Some websites and apps let you sign in with your Nemi account. What happens when one asks, what the screen you see means, and how to take access away again.
On this page
Other companies and people can build websites and apps that offer a Sign in with Nemi button. Pressing it sends you to a Nemi page where you decide whether the app may know who you are and, if it asks, work with some of your Nemi content. Nothing reaches the app until you press Allow, and you can take access away again whenever you like.
What happens when an app asks#
- 1
You press Sign in with Nemi in the app
The app sends you to a page on nemilab.com. Check the address bar: a Nemi sign-in page is always on nemilab.com.
- 2
You sign in to Nemi if you are not already
The app never sees your Nemi sign-in code or anything you type to sign in.
- 3
You see the consent screen
It shows the app's name, logo and website, the account you are signed in with, and one line for each thing the app is asking to do.
- 4
You press Allow or Cancel
Allow sends you back to the app, signed in, with exactly the access on the screen. Cancel sends you back with nothing.
The next time you use the same app, Nemi sends you straight back without the screen, as long as the app asks for nothing new. If it asks for more than you agreed to before, you see the screen again.
What the consent screen means#
Each line under "will be able to" is one permission. Seeing something and changing it are separate lines, so an app that only asks to read your Docs cannot edit them.
| The line says | What the app can then do |
|---|---|
| Know who you are on Nemi | Tell that it is you when you come back. It gets a number that identifies you to this developer only, not your email address. |
| See your name, username and profile photo | Show who is signed in. |
| See your email address | Read your email address. |
| Stay connected when you are not using it | Keep its access without asking you to sign in again, until you remove it. |
| See your workspaces, folders and files, and download them | List and download your files. |
| Upload, rename, move and delete files and folders | Change your files, including deleting them. |
| See the photos and albums in your Gallery | Look at and download your photos. Without this line an app cannot see your photos at all. |
| Add photos to your Gallery and organise albums | Upload photos, make albums and mark favourites. |
| Read, or create, edit and delete, your Docs, Sheets or Canvas boards | Exactly that, one line for reading and one for changing. |
| Read your Forms and the answers people sent | Read your forms and every response to them. |
| See, or change, events in the calendars you made in Nemi | Only calendars you created inside Nemi, never a Google or Outlook calendar you connected. |
- Never more than you can do yourself. An app works within your own role in each workspace. Where you can only view, it can only view.
- Your workspaces are shared. An app you allow can reach what your colleagues put in a workspace you belong to, the same way you can. Any line that reaches content also lets the app see the names of your workspaces and your role in each.
- Never your Vault, your contacts or your account settings. No line on the screen reaches them.
- Read the app's own privacy policy. What an app does with your data once it has it is up to the people who made it. The consent screen links to their privacy policy and terms where they have given them.
Reviewed by Nemi, or not reviewed#
Under the app's name the consent screen says one of two things.
- Reviewed by Nemi. We checked the app before letting anybody sign in to it: its description, its website and links, and that the permissions it asks for fit what it does. It is a check, not a guarantee of how the developer treats your data.
- This app has not been reviewed by Nemi yet. Only continue if you know its developer. The app is still being built. Only its developer and the people they invited to test it can sign in, so if you see this and you are not one of them, do not continue.
Removing an app's access#
- 1
Open Settings, Connected apps
Every app you allowed is listed, with what it can do, when you connected it and when it last used its access.
- 2
Press Remove access on the app
Confirm, and the app is signed out everywhere at once and can no longer reach your account.
Removing access stops the app from getting anything new. It does not delete what the app already received: ask its developer for that, under their privacy policy. If you use the app again later, it has to ask for your permission again.
Can I give an app less than it asked for?
Not line by line. If an app asks for more than you are comfortable with, press Cancel. An app you already allowed keeps what you agreed to until you remove it.
Does an app get my Nemi sign-in?
No. You sign in on nemilab.com, and the app only ever receives what the consent screen listed.
An app stopped working with my Nemi account.
You may have removed it, or Nemi may have switched the app off. Sign in to it again to see the consent screen, or contact its developer.
The full statement of what an app can receive and what we keep is in the privacy policy, section 6.3a.
